About Kamala Cards

The Vision

Kamala Cards began as an ambitious artistic project to create a unique deck of playing cards featuring Vice President Kamala Harris. Conceived by artist Justin Godesky in 2024, this project sought to blend iconography with the timeless tradition of playing card design, creating a collector's item that would celebrate a historic figure in America.

The Artistic Concept

Each card in the deck was envisioned to feature custom artwork portraying different aspects of Kamala Harris's journey and achievements. From her early days as District Attorney of San Francisco to her groundbreaking role as the first woman, first Black American, and first South Asian American Vice President, the cards would tell a visual story of leadership and perseverance.

The design aesthetic aimed to merge classic playing card traditions with contemporary art, creating something that would be equally at home in a card game, an art collection, or a piece of memorabilia. The face cards would feature particularly detailed portraits, while the number cards would incorporate symbolic elements from Harris's career and advocacy work.

Lessons and Legacy

While Kamala Cards did not come to fruition as originally envisioned, the project stands as a testament to the intersection of art and popular culture. It represents an attempt to create something unique in the merchandise space - moving beyond typical campaign materials to create an artistic object with lasting value.

The experience has provided valuable insights into the challenges and opportunities of creating topically-themed art projects in today's divided landscape. It has also reinforced the importance of community support in bringing independent artistic visions to life.

Looking Forward

While Kamala Cards may not have reached production, the creative spirit and artistic vision behind it live on in future endeavors.

For those who were excited about the Kamala Cards project, we encourage you to stay connected for future artistic initiatives that push boundaries and celebrate important figures and moments in our shared history.
